PCGS, NGC, ICG, ANACS?
I'm looking for thoughts, opinions and personal experiences with these 3rd party grading companies. I've read a bit but would like personal opinions and evaluations.
My understanding is that PCGS is the most highly regarded. From the prices on eBay it seems that most are willing to pay significantly more for a PCGS graded coin vs a NGC or any other. Are they that much better (higher standards) at accurately grading than NGC? Are they harsher in their grading than NGC? If so is it possible/likely to be able to crack open some modern MS69 PCGS coins and send them in to NGC for a possible MS70 grade? Has anyone here attempted this? I've heard of people doing something similar by cracking older PCGS coins in the older green rattler holders and resending them back to PCGS hoping for a higher grade. Both owners of PCGS and NGC are major coin dealers, do you consider this a positive or negative? Why are they (PCGS, NGC) considered better than ICG whos owners do not buy sell or trade coins? Is ICG looser in their grading or just not as well known. I only have 2 ICG graded coins because people don't pay as much for them, is this lower price justified. ANACS? I read somewhere that they are connected with NGC?.. and that you can send a coin to ANACS and ask them to forward it to NCG (same building) for grading if it's good enough? Is this true?.. or maybe it was the other way ..you could send coins to NGC and if any had a problem you could ask them to forward it to ANACS and they would grade it? Most of my coins are NGC, PCGS MS70s but I have a few PCGS MS69s. I was considering cracking a few out and resubmitting them to NGC hoping for a higher MS70 grade. Some of these would increase in perceived value quite a bit with a NGC 70 grade. Worth a try or not? http://www.camacs.com/coin_grading_services.html |
Re: PCGS, NGC, ICG, ANACS?
Depending UPON the series - that's the biggie.
In SAINTS I know that NGC & PCGS are a PUSH. In Commemeratives the positive NOD goes to PCGS. In Spouses the same. PCGS wins. With the UHR - same as SAINTS a push... All it takes is a MOMENT to check out the POPULATIONS and compare the number of say, 70s that each has done to the number of the total they did on the entire MS or PF coin you are searching out. If they are about the same percentage wise - then they are both grading the same. Simple. Make sure it's worth it to you to pay the extra 100% sometimes for a similar graded MODERN coin, right? ANACS & ICG I just use for the ANCIENTS - which they are very good at. |

At the moment is seems the NGC ER MS70 UHR's are going for more on eBay than the PCGS First Strikes, lower populations I think with the NGC ER's.

Congratulations :23_28_100s: - POPULATIONS really matter. BINGO you WIN!
I once was lucky and grabbed a NGC Early release PROOF LIKE one of 17 last year. Down the road - that will matter - I'd bet YA! Remember to study POULATIONS, total MINTAGE, total graded by the biggies NGC & PCGS - and compare the percentages they grade at TOP 70s in PF/MS too. |

say NGC total is 1000 for a certain coin and they graded 100 MS70 =10% say PCGS total is 1000 for the same coin and they graded 10 MS70 = 1% which holder in MS70 would YOU like to have? This happens all the time in SPOUSES, by the way... :signs14: |
